Start with a few priorities

Choose two or three essential experiences before filling the calendar. Palace history, mountain walking, architecture, food and family activities need different amounts of attention. Keep one major visit as the anchor of each day and add nearby stops only when they improve the rhythm. Arrival and departure days should remain lighter. Tell the planner about children’s ages, mobility needs, preferred walking time and any dietary restrictions before agreeing on a route.

Give the Forbidden City its own focus

Use the Forbidden City to understand the capital’s palace layout, then select a limited number of displays or courtyards. A nearby Jingshan visit can offer a different perspective if energy and access permit. A hutong walk belongs to a gentler part of the day rather than becoming another long checklist. Verify the palace reservation and current entrance and exit arrangements before fixing the order; a planning page cannot guarantee admission.

Set aside a separate Great Wall day

Choose an officially open Great Wall section according to the group’s stamina and comfort with heights. Include the whole return transfer, scenic transport, queues and rest stops. Steep or uneven steps can remain even where cable transport is available. A shorter walk with a clear turning point often works better for a mixed-age group. Check the weather and operating conditions before travel, and keep the evening after the outing easy.

Balance the Temple of Heaven and garden time

The Temple of Heaven adds ritual architecture and open park space, while the Summer Palace offers a larger lake-and-hill landscape. They need separate route decisions. At the Summer Palace, choose gates according to whether the visit emphasises gentler lakeside paths or climbs. At the Temple of Heaven, check park and architectural-area access separately. A family need not cover every building or complete a full lake circuit to enjoy either place.

A practical four- or five-day outline

One possible outline is a light Shichahai arrival walk, a Forbidden City day, a separate Great Wall day, and a Temple of Heaven visit adjusted to departure time. A fifth day can add the Summer Palace or a focused museum visit instead of making the first four days denser. This order is illustrative. Confirm attractions first, then match transport, accommodation area and meal breaks to the actual booking windows. Keep a weather or access alternative for each major day.

Questions before you go

Can this work in three days?
Yes, by reducing stops and choosing between secondary visits. Do not keep the same checklist and remove all breaks; decide which experiences matter most and allow a separate Great Wall window.
Which visits require confirmation?
Check each attraction’s official admission, documents and closures, then confirm any guide, transfer or optional experience separately. Availability is not guaranteed by an example route.
